The story starts in Bolton, England in 1895, where Joseph William Foster began creating one of the first spiked running shoe designs. Over the next couple of decades, J.W. Foster and Sons made a name for itself with innovative running shoes, often worn by British athletes, and always displaying the Union Jack flag as a stylistic homage.
In 1958, two of Fosterβs grandsons formed Reebok, a companion company that eventually branched out into US sales under the Reebok USA Ltd. division.
Everyoneβs an Athlete
Rooted in sport, Reebok saw opportunity for growth in the 1980s with the booming aerobics movement and changing societal views about casual exercise for health. The Reebok Freestyle debuted in 1982, an aerobics shoe designed specifically for women, paving the way for the company to reach new customers andΒ empowerΒ those customers to embrace athletic lifestyles in a way they hadnβt before.
